History

Once upon a time, there existed a giant tree that was the source of mana.
A war, however, caused this tree to wither away,
and a hero’s life was
sacrificed in order to take its place.
Grieving over the loss, the goddess
disappeared unto the heavens.

The goddess left the angels with this edict:
“You must wake me, for if I should sleep, the world shall be destroyed.”

The angels
bore the Chosen One, who headed towards the tower that reached up unto the heavens.
And that marked the beginning of the regeneration of the world...

--the legend of the world regeneration (x)

Presentation
From the moment of her birth Colette carried the burden of the Chosen: to live for the world, and to die for it. The people of Sylvarant, the people of Iselia--who didn't know what it would really mean for the Chosen to ascend to heaven--wanted a savior wealthy in the virtues of piety and joy. Colette's family, who saw no future for their daughter but what destiny proscribed, expected her to be dutiful. Colette herself, who had nothing to live for and no one to care for her as a person, gave them what they wanted because there was nothing else in her world but to do it. From the early age she learned to cover up her bruises with a smile.

The identity of being the Chosen is both an integral part of who Colette is, and a mask that she wears to cover up what she was feeling. Many of the lies Colette tells others are rooted in truths she genuinely feels, and she plays on the assumptions people make of her in order to keep them from looking at her too closely. Many of the things she says, many of the beliefs that she holds - in charity, in faith, in corny sayings about the power of justice and love - sound like a shallow-minded idiot who doesn't understand how difficult the world really is. And that's the point. Colette welcomes people thinking that about her because it keeps them from looking any deeper at how she's really feeling.

But around the people Colette relates to personally, it readily becomes apparent that she's a ditz. A huge one. Colette is prone to some truly phenomenal feats of illogic like thinking a man attacking her and trying to steal her Cruxis Crystal is just a very devoted fan, sincerely thinks 'world peace' is the kind of gift you give to a girl you want to romance, and trips through walls and conveniently onto the disarm switches for traps on a regular basis. She's self-aware enough to incorporate this into her cheerful facade when she needs to, but for the most part Colette's ditziness is completely genuine. It's not that she's not bright, it's just that sometimes she's as clumsy a thinker as she is a mover.

More than anything, maybe even sometimes more than the world, Colette cherishes her friends. They're the people who treat her like a person rather than a figure, and she's both quick to extend her trust and slow to share it. She connects with people easily, empathizes with their every struggle, and readily puts herself in a stranger's shoes. When presented with a choice between acting on logic and acting on emotion, Colette will act on emotion. Likewise, faith is an intimate experience for Colette and an expression of who she is: it's not merely faith in a sleeping Goddess who can't answer her prayers, but faith in her friends, too. Her anger is rarely incurred, and only shows itself when the people she loves are in danger.

To the outside view she may appear too soft, too gentle and naive. Colette is exactly the kind of person to try to befriend her attempted murderer, to hold out a helping hand to someone masquerading as her to rip innocent people off, to smile and forgive any wrongs done her so long as no one else is hurt. And for the most part, she is that person. But still waters reach deep, and there's more going on the surface than she's willing to let show. That's the point.

Motivations

Some people respond to the burden of the Chosen by withdrawing from the world, some by descending into madness, some by attempting to run away. But Colette?

Colette really is that nice.

When Lloyd arrived in Iselia and taught Colette the worth of her life through his warm regard and friendship, Colette didn't respond by dropping her duty and embracing her own fear of death and desire for survival. Instead she made that a source of strength as she prepared for her untimely death. The more people who took Colette into their hearts and who, in turn, were taken into hers, the more reasons Colette counted for why she wanted to protect the world. She took an act of sacrifice outside of her autonomy and made it about her decision, her choice: she was going to die for the world, not because she was told to, but because she loved the world and the people within it that much.

Colette is what happens when you take a genuinely nice person and raise them to be martyr. She's still genuinely kind, she loves the world with her entire being, but she's come to accept so deeply her role as a sacrifice that she's built her entire sense of self-worth about it. And that's not healthy. When you're raised to believe your purpose in life is to die so other people can live, the message that sends is that your own life is worth less than everyone else's lives, and certainly worth less than your death. Colette has internalized that message, so that while she genuinely cares about other people and their feelings with her whole heart, she prioritizes them over herself to a point that's dangerous to her.

Her sense of self-worth is honestly terrible. When you view your own personal autonomy and will to live as personal failings, you know you have problems. As of Colette's current canon point, with her Cruxis Crystal slowly devouring her body from the outside in, she believes she deserves even that for being a coward and trying to take the way out her friends presented her rather than meekly submitting to the sacrificial knife. She'd sooner suffer and die in silence than share what's going on, because she's so afraid of rejection and so convinced it's her fate to die.

The habit to cover up her thoughts and feelings with a laugh, a smile, became so deeply ingrained that even years later Colette continued. Even now she continues to hide her inner struggles from the people who care for her. Objectively, she knows they love her and care for her and want her only to be happy and safe. Emotionally, she's so frightened of being alone again - and likewise, of driving people away - that she's afraid to show what she considers her uglier nature to others. Self-determination, self-survival, self-love--these are admirable traits in other people, but in Colette they are her personal failings. And she's from a precise moment in her timeline before she's begun to accept that she's allowed to feel these things, that she should be allowed to feel these things, and that her life is precious and hers to do with as she wishes.

Setting: This certainly isn't the first life-or-death struggle Colette's ever been in, nor will it be the last. Neither is it the first time she's had to make peace with the probability of her death. Openly, Colette will be a conscientious objector to the Games, but once she's in the arena she'll fight to protect others if she has to.

Internally, Colette will view being pulled into the Hunger Games as a very special punishment for running away from her duties and putting herself before the world.

SAMPLES
First Person Thread:
For Tributes: You have just been killed in your first arena. It was violent, messy, and unexpected. And just as suddenly you wake back up in a very cold, very medical room. After a few moments of silence, a voice comes up over the speakers.

"Please use the device to the right to record your current feeling on your loss. Once you are finished, someone will be along to take you back to the Capitol." On cue, a small recording device starts to chirp at your side.

It is quite clear that you will be staying in the room until you make that recording.

Hello? Um, I don't know if anyone is listening... This is Colette Brunel from District [X]. I-I'm not sure what I'm supposed to say here, but I'll do my best.

That was-- I didn't like that. [ I don't like you, she thinks. I don't like you who are capable of doing this. I hate you. ] Everyone dies, it's an important part of life, but dying like that--

Dying like that and coming back...

[ She doesn't deserve to come back. This is more punishment. This is better than she deserves. The conflicted feelings pound against each other in her chest, and she has to take a deep, steadying breath.

No, she mustn't focus on that. If this can happen to her, it can happen to anybody. Has happened, to countless people here, every single one of them probably killed and brought back and killed and brought back. It's an indignity inflicted upon people, none of whom deserve it no matter how awful they are. ]

Other people are dying too. None of this is right. That's all I have to say.

Did this record? Hello? Hello? Um, I'm not sure if I did this right, should I wait for an answer or should I-- Oh, there's a button here. Maybe pressing this will--

[ The feed cuts out. ]

Prose
You have been set in a room in front of the Gamemakers to be judged on a score of one to twelve, with one being the lowest and twelve being the highest. The Gamemakers sit safely behind a force field and watch, and you are provided with an array of weapons and targets, though no gun to be seen.

If you are a new tribute, you have been plucked from home and rushed in here with only a brief explanation of what is going on: You are about to enter an arena death match that only one person will make it out of, and impressing these people will help you live.

If you are someone from Panem, then you are very unlucky. You know what's going on but... you were told all the tributes were from a foreign land now. So why are you in front of the Gamemakers fighting for your life now? Are you a criminal, a traitor, deeply in debt? Or do you even know why you were shoved in to this room?

At first she thinks she must have died finally, once the shaking of the world stops and she wakes to find herself surrounded by men all in purest white with glossy metal surfaces and magitech consoles beeping all around her. Maybe the backlash from the final mana link being severed knocked them all unconscious and Yggdrasill sent his soldiers to put a stop to their defiance of him and bring Colette to Cruxis.

Not Kratos. She doesn't believe that of Kratos, can't believe it of him, because he's a good person, she can feel it in her bones the way she can feel sunshine on her skin again and the frantic beating of her heart.

She is so afraid. She hopes Lloyd is okay.

She follows where they lead her, and listens mutely but in growing bewilderment to the instructions they give her. An arena where? A death match against who? Impress who? Maybe she has to fight other Chosen, and only the one Chosen left standing will get to be Martel's vessel. That doesn't seem a very practical way to decide whose body someone gets to invade, but Colette isn't exactly an expert in the science. If it is other Chosen, then she's fighting how many other countless girls like her (seven that she knows of in the history of Sylvarant, who knows how many more there she didn't know of, and so likely so many more from Tethe'alla) who never got to have their own lives, who were someone else's puppets, who lived and died believing their deaths would mean something without understanding how twisted their world really is. And if it's not other Chosen - though she can't fathom who else it would be - she'd just be hurting innocent people who haven't done her any wrong.

They show her into the big room with all of its weapons, neatly arrayed on racks for helpful perusal. There's swords like Lloyd would use, and some that look more Kratos's or Zelos's style; axes perfectly crafted for someone like Presea, even some rods she thinks Professor Sage could make use of. No kendamas or spell cards, but maybe those are just too specific; Genis and Sheena do use very uncommon weapons.

On one rack there are a pair of rings, perfectly round, metal gleaming, and Colette can see at a glance they're exactly the right size to use if she wishes. She looks up at the audience clustered in the spectator's box, and feels like she's in the Meltokio Coliseum with important people looking down on her. Colette steps forward and feels her feet tangle together, catches herself on a rack before she falls and rights herself. She does what seems the appropriate thing and bows to them.

"Hello," she says, hands clasped politely in front of her. "Um, I've been told it's a huge honor to be brought here, and I'm honored and everything. So thank you. But I'm not going to fight. I'm so sorry to be so rude, I really am, but I don't want to hurt anyone. This doesn't seem right."

She bows again, and manages a weak smile. "I'm really sorry."

What is your character scored:  Logically, I would say a 6. While Colette has been trained in self defense from a young age and has ample experience to back it up, her Cruxis Crystal will no longer be boosting her abilities above the normal peak human potential, and she's incredibly clumsy.

However, Colette is a pacifist at heart who will morally object to the games, and when placed before the gamemakers, she'll refuse to perform for them (with an apology for her rudeness, of course). So realistically, she shouldn't score any higher than a 2, if her willful resistance even impresses anyone; more likely she gets a big fat stinking 0 for refusing to perform for anyone's amusement.

Colette's preferred weapon is rings or chakrams, and she operates best at mid-to-long range. Ironically, although her stats are average, narratively she is one of the two physically strongest members of the party thanks to the power of her Cruxis Crystal. On the flip side, she can be a powerful magical tank thanks to her angel abilities. A list of Colette's artes and abilities can be found here.

The thing that sets the cast of Tales of Symphonia apart from average fighters (and, indeed, from much of the rest of their world) are small, perfectly round stones called Exspheres. When attached to the skin, Exspheres boost a person's latent abilities well beyond their normal potential, although they're poisonous when worn without a key crest to restrict their parasitic properties. There also exists a further evolved form of the Exsphere known as a Cruxis Crystal, and bearers of Cruxis Crystals are known as angels: winged beings with preternaturally extended lifespans and levels of power.

Cruxis Crystals bestow many benefits:
  • Enhanced strength, hearing, vision, and endurance
  • Extended lifespan (as a reference, elves and half-elves generally live around 1000 years, but angels are capable of living for more than 4000 with no sign of illness or physical decay)
  • Shapeshifting and regressive/frozen aging
  • Wings, varying from traditional physical angel wings to translucent, semi-physical wings of pure energy
  • A host of powerful light-based magical abilities

...as well as many kickbacks, when worn without a key crest (with a key crest, these may be accessed at will and are seen by some as beneficial effects):
  • Loss of ability to sleep or need to sleep
  • Loss of ability to eat, need to eat, or ability to derive nourishment from food or water
  • Loss of ability to feel physical sensations, such as temperature or pain
  • Loss of ability to speak
  • Loss of soul and memories, leaving the bearer vulnerable to possession by another spirit
  • Extended exposure to a Cruxis Crystal without the protection of a key crest can result in the Cruxis Crystal literally devouring the soul of its bearer
  • Select rare individuals (Colette is such a one) react negatively to the Cruxis Crystal, and when their body rejects it, the crystal responds by attempting to physically devour the host (termed Chronic Angelus Crystallus Inofficium)
Colette will be coming in from a canon point in which her body is rejecting her Cruxis Crystal, and while naturally her powers will be cut off and the crystal's effects on her body as well, I would like for her to retain her crystal, key crest, and a very faint latticework of scars across her shoulders. The people of the Capitol will like her crystal: it looks like fancy jewelry literally embedded into her skin.

❧ The mana lineages of both worlds are descended from Mithos Yggdrasill, meaning he's Colette and Zelos's ancestor.

❧ Her mother died when she was very little. Colette has no memory of her.

❧ She was about four or five when the priests were like, "Hey guess what, you're gonna die when you're 16." She didn't really comprehend what that meant until she met Lloyd.

❧ Learned to fight specifically to protect herself on her journey.

❧ Late in the game when she became Martel's vessel and communicated with Martel's spirit, Colette offered to let Martel have her body. It was really half-hearted and motivated mostly out of Colette's sympathy for Martel's pain and suffering, which Martel could tell. Colette didn't actually want to lose her body. Obviously Martel refused.

❧ She still prays to Martel every night. Yes, she knows it's weird.

❧ People in the two worlds face the Holy Ground of Kharlan when they pray. Not really Colette headcanon and it's kind of random, but idk?????

❧ Colette's actually a pretty good liar. She's certainly not on the same level as Kratos, Zelos, Raine, or Regal, but when the topic is something important to her, she's pretty good at lying/deflecting the question. Sometimes she'll outright lie (re: Martel), sometimes she'll skim over something or change the subject (re: dying), and sometimes she'll act dumb to draw attention away from the original topic.

❧ Her and Lloyd's first stop on their journey to collect Exspheres was Palmacosta, where they threw themselves into the rebuilding efforts. She knows people blame her for what happened to Palmacosta, and she also knows she can never make it right. But she's partly responsible, so she wants to help in any way she can.
